† iRotate

So, what else did I do today besides sleep?

Well, I did spend some time on my video card driver on my notebook PC.

The story goes like this:

My notebook is a HP/Compaq nx4300, and the video card is Intel 915GM series.

The thing about this Intel 915GM video card driver I didn't like about is that it does not come with a rotate function. It maybe a very common function with present day video cards, even my desktop PC's video card has the rotate function built in despite its older than my notebook PC. However I don't know what is wrong with Intel, but somehow the 915GM does not have this function.

This was especially a problem for me on my notebook PC. I don't really need the rotate function on my desktop since I am using XSGA (1280 * 1024 pxl) + XGA (1024 * 768). The XSGA is pretty much a near square looking screen, so there is not much a difference between whether I rotate the screen or not. (Wide-screen DVD movies would still only use about half of my entire monitor area, but this format is very handy when surfing the web, using M$ office, or reading manga). It is totally a different story with my notebook PC. My notebook PC has a really weird resolution format, the (weird) WXGA (1280 * 768), its even wider than the usual wide screen monitors on the market (the usual WXGA is 1280 * 800). Its pretty good when you are watching a wide-screen DVD movie, but not so nice when you are trying to read some documents that are in portrait format instead of landscape (and please tell me how many documents are in landscape format? none?). You either have to minimize the entire page to really small, or risk only be able to read the upper portion/lower portion of the document in the original resolution. More importantly. I would love to read something from my notebook while laying on my bed.

Long story short, the rotate function is still not present on the newest driver from Intel for 915GM. So after some googling, I found a free program made by a Taiwanese firm called "iRotate". It pretty much works like an add-on for the video card drivers that do not have the rotate function. So with a push of Ctrl + Alt + ↑/↓/←/→, I can change the orientation of my screen. Finally!! I am able to read off my notebook while laying completely on my side. \ ^o^ /

Better yet, the wide screen works so well on single-paged manga scan as you can see from the example below.

The ratio aspect of the single paged manga works pretty well with a wide-screen if we can turn the screen 90/270 degrees.

This is especially true on reading novels. On the original orientation, if I want to read the entire page all at once, the words would be too small for me to read. Yet, if I make the word big enough, then I have to scroll up and down on every single line.

So, yeah!!! iRotate is such a handy program for pool guys like me who can't get a simple rotate function from the video card driver.
